I’ve spent most of my life west of the Mississippi, where ghost towns and ramshackle homesteads dot the landscape. It’s the history that lingers on in the land I know best. The Old West is a favorite setting of mine, especially when mixed with my favorite genres. Whether it’s weird western horror, steampunk adventure, western-influenced dystopia or historical fantasy, you’ll find something to hunker down with here.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic is historical settings.
I enjoyed Silver on the Road and Karen Memory–the world is a tough and dangerous place, so tough and dangerous women are a perfect character for worlds like that.

I’m about half way through Silver on the Road and really enjoying it so far. There’s a lot less fantasy element than I expected, but I adore the writing style. Vivid landscapes and a talent for nonverbal communication and just enough old timey prose to feel real, but never a struggle to understand.

It’s a subtle sort of magic, the kind that goes along with the world instead of overwhelming it. Happy reading!

I agree. Unless it shows itself a lot more dramatically before the end, it feels a lot like magical realism to me.

You might really enjoy Curio by Evangeline Denmark – it’s a steampunk/dystopian novel with a little bit of a western feel. My TTT

I haven’t heard most of these but the short blurbs sound very interesting! Silver on the Road sounds particularly intriguing. I’ve actually never read a western. And I’ve heard of the Rae Carson title multiple times last year in the blogosphere. Thanks for sharing this list, Kimberly!
